Just time to debadge. We don’t have to identify as ST owners. LOL.

Agreed. Get rid of the turbocharged bastards that sullied the ST badge...

Eh. I fail to see why this is an issue. I don’t think Camaro owners were quick to break out the knife just because the malibu SS became a thing...

ST = sanitary towel?

Wait until there’s an Equinox SS, or Equinox ZL1.

With only one transmission choice. The wrong one.

I’d have been ecstatic if they came out with a Fusion ST with a manual. Even if it was less powerful than the Fusion Sport. But this? Nope.

I mean, the trailblazer SS, the AWD silverado SS, the naturally aspirated cobalt SS, the FWD sad-as-shit impala SS with a V8 no more powerful than the V6, and the equinox Sport certainly did their best to kill any brand cache the name held...

Also, the “ST-Line” has been a thing overseas for a while now. Same with the M-sport, S-line, and AMG-lite or whatever, badges done by other companies.

I don’t like the Edge ST and I think they’re just using badge recognition to rebrand the Sport trim, but it is very far from some unique form of awfulness and the Edge sport is at least a legit performer, all things considered. Personally, I’d like to see Ford at least pretend to care and offer a manual OR offer a high output version with carbon fiber bits and lightweight glass and call it the Edge “Ghost Pepper” edition that competes against the Porsche Cayenne but no one’s perfect.

I don’t see this as a big deal. I really don;t care. I own an ST so maybe Ford should be worried that i don’t, but that’s the way it is. This means nothing to me and I doubt it will mean anything to the majority of people. LEt it die if you hate it so much but don’t carry it forward on the winds of hate. For they will take a ship much further on its journey than if you just let the tepid winds of mediocrity strand it.

I get it, but, this is, as best as I am aware, the first ST model to be offered without a manual choice. I believe all of the Mondeo’s even the most recent, was nearly universally a manual (though the latest came with an auto option if memory serves).

I mean, there are no sacred cows, I get that. But it was nice to dream for a bit that maybe we could at least get a line that at least preserved this. But no.

And for the other performance lines? Well, dilution is dilution regardless of name.

Bad news - the ST line NEEDS automatics in order to survive. Manuals don’t sell in the volumes needed to justify cars and trim packages sometimes. A Focus ST with an automatic will happen or we will not have a Focus ST in the future. Mark my words.

Look at it as the man who jumped on the grenade - The EDGE was the one to take the hit. And it makes sense. The Edge never had a manual to begin with. Why start now? Now the lack of an option is a problem, but th existence of a manual is not. So the edge being the first to take an automatic trans while wearing an ST badge is okay by my books.

I know you’re right.

And you are. And you know it too.

That doesn’t stop me from being just the littlest bit disappointed in this.

And for the record, it really was the manual only piece that got me in the door. The driving experience sold me the rest of the way.

This doesn’t really have an impact on me. I’m not having any more kids. I don’t need an SUV. And if I ever, ever get another one, it’ll be a bad decision based on my desire to go overlanding. So this isn’t even the vehicle in the class I would care about.

So having said all that I have, I think we can both agree on two things here.

1) Ford seemed to pitch this announcement at ST owners/fans/owners of the competition. All of which are universally in agreement that this was dumb.

2) Once you get past the dumb, this is a pretty solid vehicle. And if you approach it from the angle of getting non-enthusiasts into caring about how a car drives, then this car can be part of the front lines of stemming the tide against the autonomous car wiping out everything worth driving. After all, when they go to turn in the edge and find that the car/crossover they get is slow as balls and handles like shit, then they’ll pay attention to the ST badging and look into it.

That’s my advice to the haters - stop seeing it as a terrible pitch towards enthusiasts to buy a watered down vehicle and instead see it as a pitch to non-enthusiasts to realize the “Sport” trimmed Edges didn’t mean base-model like the Sport branding does for honda and toyota and others.....

Yeah, this was a massive marketing fail.

And I agree. You have some serious logic to back up your position, this is a positive. Just not in the way it was pitched.

Kinja'd!!! themanwithsauce - has as many vehicles as job titles > Gamecat235

Kinja'd!!!1

Oh for sure as a marketing stance this is a catastrophic failure of any dollars spent on it. The commercials are dumb, aimed at the wrong audience (I JUST bought my FoST, I’m not buying a fucking EdgeST”) and don’t convey the idea behind it well at all.

But I am able to defend my position well because the vehicle already existed which is yet another failure on FOrd’s part - that the Edge Sport was a thing. If it continues, I can’t see why Ford would do that. Ford needs to retire it and let the ST take over. Anything less will hamstring the common goal.

Its not an affront to the badge. It has 707HP and a superchager.

This is a slightly more powerful model of the existing car, no real changes other than some token quasi performance parts.

Also all Ford Performance vehicles with the exception of the GT and Raptor have been manual

It’s also considerably more powerful than any other ST. And if the GT can be auto-only the rest of them can too!

I guess I just don’t put that much stock in the ST badge
